Legion Subtlety Rogue WoW PvP Guide | 7.3 Talents

by Bigmoran // September 29, 2017

This guide will cover supplemental information for Subtlety Rogues in Legion. Bear in mind that as the meta develops in the early stages of the season, you can expect to see some changes to the following information. All information in this guide has been provided by Foxyo (7x Rank 1, 5x Gladiator).

Tier 1

Gloomblade is almost always the best talent for your first tier. Gloomblade replaces Backstab and ignores armor, allowing you to deal significantly more damage to high armored targets such as Warriors and even druids in Bear Form. Alternatively, when playing against RMP or any comp with a combination of 3 low armored targets, you should use Master of Subtlety as the armor penetration from Gloomblade will be less effective.

Tier 2

Subterfuge remains the strongest stealth based talent for Subtlety Rogues. This talent gives you tremendous utility with your Vanishes, allowing you to control multiple enemy targets during its duration. Lastly, this talent increases the duration of Shadow Dance, giving you significantly more control during its duration.

Tier 3

As of 7.2.5, Vigor is still the preferred talent choice on this tier. Again, you should always chose the talents that give you the most consistent damage increases. Not only does Vigor offer an energy increase, this also allows you to budget more of your energy pool for damaging attacks after you have used your stun abilities on an enemy target.

Tier 4

Elusiveness is definitely the strongest talent on this tier. In arena, Soothing Darkness only amounts to ~20,000 HPS. The damage reduction offered by Elusiveness will drastically outperform this over the course of an arena match.

Tier 5

In most cases, Prey on the Weak is the best talent for this tier. This talent gives your entire team increased damage during its duration. Because this expansion is so damage oriented, this talent is optimal for most situations.

Tier 6

As of patch 7.2.5, Dark Shadow is the best talent on this tier. This ability provides you with 25% (in PvP) increased damage during Shadow Dance. This allows you to build more pressure with your primary offensive cooldown.

Tier 7

For your final tier, Marked for Death is the best option unless you’re playing against a Mage in which case you should spec into Death from Above in order to keep up with their mobility. Marked for Death only has a 40 second cooldown, allowing you to burst your opponents much more frequently with Eviscerate. This is really important in the current meta because your win conditions come in the form of bursting an enemy 100-0 in a series of stuns.

Tier 1

If you are not playing as an Orc, Gladiator’s Medallion is the best talent for your first tier. If you are playing Orc, Relentless is a much stronger option against teams with lots of stuns. The combination of Relentless and Hardiness gives you a drastic reduction of stun durations. This allows you to have higher uptime against most teams.

Tier 2

Reinforced Armor is the strongest talent on this tier if the enemy team has at least one caster DPS. Because all of your self-healing is based on a percentage of your total health, this talent allows you to have receive more healing from Crimson Vial and gives you more effective HP so long as the enemy team isn’t playing double melee. If the enemy team has at least two melee DPS, then Sparring is a better talent choice as it is better overall for your survivability because it gives you more effective HP.

Tier 3

You should pick Shiv against teams where you think you will need to peel, such as melee cleaves that will train your healer. This talent gives you more control over the enemy team. Maneuverability should be taken against teams where you think you will be kited. Speccing into Maneuverability causes your sprint to remove all slows when used, making it much easier to stick to your target when your Sprint is available.

Tier 4

Smoke Bomb is the talent of choice here and is a very versatile ability and can even be used as a key ability to win games. Thieves’ Gambit is an alternative talent choice that can be used in extremely rare situations (such as when playing against a spellcleave and you want to be able to give one of your partners immunity through your Cloak of Shadows).

Tier 5

Cold Blood is still the best talent on this tier. This ability gives you some additional burst damage, giving you more consistent burst setups. The main downfall of Subtlety is that you lack a powerful offensive cooldown. Cold Blood helps fill that void. Moreover, this talent deals percentage based damage, meaning it is great against any target that has higher healthpools.

Tier 6

You should always play with Thief’s Bargain. It reduces the cooldown of Vanish by 45 seconds, leaving you with a 45 second cooldown on your Vanish (down from 90 seconds). It also increases your damage by 10% on all abilities and reduces your health by 15%, a trade off that is most definitely worth it in most situations.
