Legion Resto Shaman WoW PvP Guide | 7.3 Talents

by Bigmoran // September 28, 2017

This guide will cover supplemental information for Resto Shamans in Legion. Bear in mind that as the meta develops in the early stages of the season, you can expect to see some changes to the following information. All information in this guide has been provided by Chas (Blizzcon Competitor, 10x Rank 1, 6x Gladiator).

Tier 1

Torrent is your primary talent choice in this tier. The current meta doesn’t leave much room for healers to free cast and so the increased healing on Riptide is extremely useful. Against comps that allow you to free cast, Undulation becomes the best choice in this tier.

Tier 2

Gust of Wind is the best talent on this tier. Overall this talent is amazing for Resto Shamans. It is extremely versatile and can be used both offensively and defensively. It can be used to push into an enemy team for interrupts or purges; it can also be used to pull back to a safer position and kite enemy DPS.

Tier 3

As long as you aren’t playing with a class that relies on its own stun DRs (such as Rogue or Warrior) Lightning Surge Totem is the best talent on this tier. This totem is amazing both offensively and defensively as a CC effect. If you are playing with a Rogue or Warrior and need additional survivability against melee DPS, Earthgrab Totem is a powerful alternative. If you want to play around the enemy team’s Adaptation, you can play Voodoo Totem. Doing so will give you the ability to instantly proc an Adapt. You might also find this talent useful against Destruction Warlocks and Mages for stopping spellcasts.

Tier 4

Overall, the talents on your fourth tier are a bit underwhelming. Crashing Waves is the best talent on this tier because it consistently good when compared to the other talent options.

Tier 5

Earthen Shield Totem is the strongest talent on this tier. This totem is amazing, especially when used before enemy burst damage or before you enter a CC chain. The damage mitigation this totem provides is extremely good at keeping your partners alive during high pressure situations.

Tier 6

Because having access to two Riptide charges is incredibly powerful for your HPS, Echo of the Elements is the strongest talent on this tier. This talent makes it much easier to maintain Tidal Waves uptime, something which is really important for your overall healing. If you expect a deep dampening game, Bottomless Depths becomes the best talent in this tier when combined with Undulation.

Tier 7

Ascendance represents one of the strongest healing cooldowns in the game and it earns its spot as the best talent on this tier. This ability is really good for reacting to enemy CDs and for responding to high AoE damage from enemy teams.

Tier 1

If you’re playing an Orc, Relentless is the primary talent choice for this tier against teams with stuns. Gladiator’s Medallion is an alternative option against comps which have longer CC chains coupled with big offensive CDs. Being able to Trinket and use Spirit Link is really important vs some teams. If you are playing against teams with long CD but long duration CCs, such as hunter comps where their only crowd control over 5 seconds is freezing trap, Adaptation becomes a really good option for this tier.

Tier 2

Defender of the Weak is the primary talent choice for this tier. The only time you might want to consider swapping talents is against Rogue/Mage or melee cleaves, where Calming Waters is often more valuable due to the number of low CD interrupts.

Tier 3

Because it is the most consistent of all the talent options on this tier, Skyfury Totem is the best talent for your third row. This ability can be used offensively and is incredibly powerful when lined up with your teams offensive cooldowns. It can also be used defensively as a boost to your HPS.

Tier 4

Swelling Waves is the optimal talent for your first tier. The current meta is incredibly fast paced, which means you should value higher burst healing. This talent helps you deal with getting trained by giving you more self healing while kiting enemy melees. Purifying Waters is an alternative talent on this tier, but should only be used in matchups where there is a lot to purge. This talent can be useful against Resto Druid teams for giving you more incentives to dispel HoTs, especially when also playing with Electrocute.

Tier 5

I mostly play with Grounding Totem on this tier because it is something I have become accustomed to over the years. Overall this spell is still really powerful against any team with a caster DPS or any team with a Ret Paladin as it allows you to avoid Hammer of Justice. If there is absolutely nothing to Ground, then play with Electrocute or Voodoo Mastery. If you are playing a comp that primarily deals AoE cleave damage or if you are playing against a Restoration Druid, Electrocute should be your alternative pick. If your team needs additional CC, then play Voodoo Mastery.

Tier 6

The optimal talent choice in every matchup is Earth Shield. The 10% damage reduction it provides to targets is really helpful for healing the enemy’s target.
