Legion Unholy DK WoW PvP Guide | 7.2 Talents

This guide will cover supplemental information for Unholy DK in Legion. Bear in mind that as the meta develops in the early stages of the season, you can expect to see some changes to the following information. All information in this guide has been provided by Cervantes (EU Regionals Qualifier, 5x Rank 1, 7x Gladiator).
If the enemy team is likely going to cleave your pet, All Will Serve is the best talent on this tier. Aside from giving you an on demand pet resummon, it also gives you an additional minion, slightly increasing your overall damage. Bursting Sores is an alternative talent choice if you plan on playing super aggressive and you don’t care about your pet getting cleaved. If you are playing with a DoT class, Ebon Fever is the best talent on this tier as it gives you more AoE damage.
Blighted Rune Weapon is my usual talent on this tier. It makes swapping targets significantly easier, allowing you to build stacks of Festering Wounds quickly on a target every minute.
As of 7.2, Castigator is the optimal talent for arena. The Necrotic Strike build from last season is being swapped out for more consistent/passive damage options. Castigator allows you to ramp up your damage quicker in arena, giving you more pressure overall.
Asphyxiate has been one of the most iconic DK abilities since its creation and is my talent of choice for this tier. Because Unholy DKs no longer have Strangulate, it is really important to chose this talent as it gives you access to a powerful ranged CC ability.
Your talent choice for this tier highly depends on what comp you are playing against. If you are fighting a team with a physical DPS, Corpse Shield is usually your best option. Even though the cooldown can be ineffective if your pet is rotting to AoE damage, its ability to reduce damage against melee DPS in unmatched on this tier. If you are playing against a spellcleave or if you are playing without All Will Serve, then Spell Eater is definitely the better option. This talent increases your survivability and allows you to avoid more casted CC during the duration of Anti-Magic Shield. The only time you would ever want to play Lingering Apparition is if you are absolutely certain the enemy team will not attack you. This is the offensive talent option for this tier.
As of 7.2, Infected Claws is the best talent choice for this tier. Overall this talent will yield the most consistent DPS by giving you additional Festering Wound stacks. This allows you to ramp up your damage quicker on enemy targets.
Soul Reaper is the strongest talent on this tier in terms of consistent damage. The stacking Haste buff it provides increase your DPS by a noticeable amount and allows you to deal really good damage over its duration.
As of 7.2 Gladiator’s Medallion is your best talent choice. Most teams will check for Adaption before using any meaningful CC on you. Having an on demand CC break is really important as a DK, especially when you need to use it in combination with a defensive CD. Relentless can be an option against teams that have spammable, non-DRing CC. This talent is often useful if you are not the kill target, but will be getting constantly Polymorphed or Feared throughout a matchup.
Your talent choice for this tier will depend on what you are playing against. If the enemy team has a melee DPS, Sparring is the best option as it represents the highest damage reduction. If the enemy team has a caster DPS, then Reinforced Armor is a more optimal choice. You can play Hardiness against DoT comps that are unlikely to kill you (such as Feral/Shadow Priest) if you anticipate that you will mostly be above 80% for the entire game.
Anti-Magic Zone is definitely the strongest talent on this tier if the enemy team has a caster DPS. Being able to mitigate damage dealt to you and your partners really adds to your utility toolkit as a DK. If the has an important CC you can steal, then Dark Simulacrum is a stronger option. Overall this tier doesn’t have much to offer for dealing with physical damage, but you can use Dark Sim on a healer to try and steal important spells.
Heartstop Aura is a really unique mechanic and is my talent of choice for this tier. Slowing down the recovery rate of enemy CDs is really good for allowing you to stay ahead in the tempo game in nearly every matchup. If you are playing with an Affliction Warlock, then Necrotic Aura can be a better choice. Overall this talent represents more DPS for your team. Decomposing Aura can be played if you plan on only training the enemy healer as a melee cleave.
For maximizing your overall damage, Crypt Fever is the strongest talent on this tier. If you are able to apply Festering Wound to multiple targets, you will see a substantial increase to your DPS with this talent.
As of 7.2, Necrotic Strike is no longer the optimal talent choice for your final tier. Unholy Mutation is quickly becoming the best talent choice for most matchups. This ability gives you more damage and a pretty consistent snare effect in arena, allowing you to have more uptime and control over enemy teams.
