Legion Unholy DK WoW PvP Guide | 7.2.5 Talents

by Bigmoran // February 1, 2017

This guide will cover supplemental information for Unholy DK in Legion. Bear in mind that as the meta develops in the early stages of the season, you can expect to see some changes to the following information. All information in this guide has been provided by Cervantes (EU Regionals Qualifier, 5x Rank 1, 7x Gladiator).

Tier 1

As of 7.2.5 most of your talent choices should reflect whatever gives you the most damage throughput. In single damage situations, Bursting Sores is the best talent choice, especially if you plan on playing super aggressive and you don’t care about your pet getting cleaved. I also play this against any Holy Paladin team or Mistweaver running Way of the Crane as the enemy team is likely to be stacked up in those situations, allowing you to deal more damage. If you are playing with a DoT class, Ebon Fever is the best talent on this tier as it gives you more AoE damage. All Will Serve is no longer the optimal talent choice as it is too much damage to give up for selecting this talent.

Tier 2

Blighted Rune Weapon is my usual talent on this tier. It makes swapping targets significantly easier, allowing you to build stacks of Festering Wounds quickly on a target every minute.

Tier 3

As of 7.2.5,  Castigator is no longer the optimal talent choice in arena. In most games I play Clawing Shadows. This talent gives you some consistent damage when you are getting kited or are needing to range enemy players. This talent works well with both Necrotic Strike and Unholy Mutation in your final tier of PvP talents. Unholy Frenzy is an alternative talent choice that works especially well with Necrotic Strike (as it now procs from Necrotic Strikes as well). This talent should mainly be selected when you are guaranteed to have high uptime on a target while playing with Necrotic Strike.

Tier 4

Asphyxiate has been one of the most iconic DK abilities since its creation and is my talent of choice for this tier. Because Unholy DKs no longer have Strangulate, it is really important to chose this talent as it gives you access to a powerful ranged CC ability.

Tier 5

Your talent choice for this tier highly depends on what comp you are playing against. If you are fighting a team with a physical DPS, Corpse Shield is usually your best option. Even though the cooldown can be ineffective if your pet is rotting to AoE damage, its ability to reduce damage against melee DPS in unmatched on this tier. If you are playing against a spellcleave or if you are playing without All Will Serve, then Spell Eater is definitely the better option. This talent increases your survivability and allows you to avoid more casted CC during the duration of Anti-Magic Shield. The only time you would ever want to play Lingering Apparition is if you are absolutely certain the enemy team will not attack you. This is the offensive talent option for this tier.

Tier 6

As of 7.2.5, Infected Claws is still the best talent choice for this tier. Overall this talent will yield the most consistent DPS by giving you additional Festering Wound stacks. This allows you to ramp up your damage quicker on enemy targets. Necrosis is an alternative talent choice and should only be selected when you are playing with Clawing Shadows as it will give you more burst on a single target.

Tier 7

Soul Reaper is the strongest talent on this tier in terms of consistent damage. The stacking Haste buff it provides increase your DPS by a noticeable amount and allows you to deal really good damage over its duration.

Tier 1

As of 7.2.5 Gladiator’s Medallion is your best talent choice. Most teams will check for Adaption before using any meaningful CC on you. Having an on demand CC break is really important as a DK, especially when you need to use it in combination with a defensive CD. Relentless can be an option against teams that have spammable, non-DRing CC. This talent is often useful if you are not the kill target, but will be getting constantly Polymorphed or Feared throughout a matchup.

Tier 2

Your talent choice for this tier will depend on what you are playing against. If the enemy team has a melee DPS, Sparring is the best option as it represents the highest damage reduction. If the enemy team has a caster DPS, then Reinforced Armor is a more optimal choice. You can play Hardiness against DoT comps that are unlikely to kill you (such as Feral/Shadow Priest) if you anticipate that you will mostly be above 80% for the entire game.

Tier 3

If the enemy team has an important CC you can steal or doesn’t have a caster DPS, then Dark Simulacrum is a stronger option. Overall this tier doesn’t have much to offer for dealing with physical damage, but you can use Dark Sim on a healer to try and steal important spells like Cyclone and Hex. Anti-Magic Zone is  the strongest talent on this tier if the enemy team has a caster DPS and you need an additional defensive option for you or your team. Being able to mitigate damage dealt to you and your partners really adds to your utility toolkit as a DK.

Tier 4

As of 7.2.5 Heartstop Aura is no longer the best talent on this tier. This is due to how fast the meta has became. Because of the fast pace of 3v3, the other two talents are more optimal as they indirectly increase your damage throughput and pressure. If you are playing with a caster in 3v3, then Necrotic Aura can be a better choice. Overall this talent represents more DPS for your teammates who deal magical damage. Decomposing Aura is an alternative choice and should be selected when you aren’t playing with something that deals magical damage. You can also play this while playing with a caster if that is what you prefer. It all comes down to whether or not you value increasing your teams damage or deceasing enemy HP.

Tier 5

For maximizing your overall damage, Crypt Fever is the strongest talent on this tier. If you are able to apply Festering Wound to multiple targets, you will see a substantial increase to your DPS with this talent.

Tier 6

As of 7.2.5, Necrotic Strike is now the primary talent choice for this tier. Its damage was recently increased and it was made to correctly work with Unholy Frenzy. This talent is useful in every single matchup. That being said, you can still play with Unholy Mutation. This ability gives  a pretty consistent snare effect in arena, allowing you to have more uptime and control over enemy teams. If you want a more defensive, control based playstyle than this might be the talent for you.
