Legion Frost DK WoW PvP Guide | 7.2.5 Talents

by Bigmoran // February 1, 2017

This guide will cover supplemental information for Frost DK in Legion. Bear in mind that as the meta develops in the early stages of the season, you can expect to see some changes to the following information. All information in this guide has been provided by Cervantes (EU Regionals Qualifier, 5x Rank 1, 7x Gladiator).

Tier 1

Just like Unholy, you should always try and pick the talents that give you the most consistent damage in an arena setting. Icy Talons is the strongest talent on this tier because it provides the best damage between all three talent options.

Tier 2

Frozen Pulse is the strongest talent on this tier. This talent gives you some form of damage when you are fully depleted of runes. This allows you to continue building pressure even when you cannot use some of your damaging abilities. Freezing Fog is a talent that can also be selected, though only in environments where you want high AoE damage (such as RBGs).

Tier 3

Your primary offensive CD as a Frost DK is Pillar of Frost. During its duration you will deal significantly more damage and cause massive pressure to the enemy team. Avalanche is the best talent on this tier because it buffs your already powerful offensive CD. The only time you would want to play Hungering Rune Weapon is if you want to completely all-in a target in a short game.

Tier 4

If you are playing with classes that have reliable stuns, then Binding Sleet is a better option as it gives your team access to an additional CC DR. Even though the stun effect isn’t completely reliable, Winter is Coming the primary talent on this tier if you need a stun effect. Being able to stun a target while your Pillar of Frost is active is extremely important for dealing meaningful damage.

Tier 5

The talent choice for this tier entirely depends on what you are playing against. Permafrost should be selected against most teams with at least one physical DPS. Volatile Shielding should be selected against teams that have multiple caster DPS. It dramatically increases the power of your AMS, allowing it to absorb more and deal damage back to enemy casters.

Tier 6

Again, because it provides the most consistent damage in arena, Gathering Storm is the strongest talent for this tier. This talent allows you to deal extra damage with your Remorseless Winter, and allows you to extend its duration. Overall this synergizes well with Winter is Coming by giving you more chances to land a stun on enemy targets.

Tier 7

As of 7.2.5 Breath of Sindragosa is the optimal talent for your final tier. This talent wasn’t selected in the past because of its low damage, but that has since changed. The damage of this ability is now high enough that it outperforms the other two talent options on this tier.

Tier 1

As of 7.2.5 Gladiator’s Medallion is your best talent choice. Most teams will check for Adaption before using any meaningful CC on you. Having an on demand CC break is really important as a DK, especially when you need to use it in combination with a defensive CD. Relentless can be an option against teams that have spammable, non-DRing CC. This talent is often useful if you are not the kill target, but will be getting constantly Polymorphed or Feared throughout a matchup.

Tier 2

Your talent choice for this tier will depend on what you are playing against. If the enemy team has a melee DPS, Sparring is the best option as it represents the highest damage reduction. If the enemy team has a caster DPS, then Reinforced Armor is a more optimal choice. You can play Hardiness against DoT comps that are unlikely to kill you (such as Feral/Shadow Priest) if you anticipate that you will mostly be above 80% for the entire game.

Tier 3

Anti-Magic Zone is definitely the strongest talent on this tier if the enemy team has a caster DPS. Being able to mitigate damage dealt to you and your partners really adds to your utility toolkit as a DK. If the has an important CC you can steal, then Dark Simulacrum is a stronger option. Overall this tier doesn’t have much to offer for dealing with physical damage, but you can use Dark Sim on a healer to try and steal important spells.

Tier 4

As of 7.2.5 Heartstop Aura is no longer the best talent on this tier. This is due to how fast the meta has became. Because of the fast pace of 3v3, the other two talents are more optimal as they indirectly increase your damage throughput and pressure. If you are playing with a caster in 3v3, then Necrotic Aura can be a better choice. Overall this talent represents more DPS for your teammates who deal magical damage. Decomposing Aura is an alternative choice and should be selected when you aren’t playing with something that deals magical damage. You can also play this while playing with a caster if that is what you prefer. It all comes down to whether or not you value increasing your teams damage or deceasing enemy HP.

Tier 5

Overall Frozen Center is the most consistent option for this tier. Many DK comps deal damage to multiple targets at once. Being able to root more than one target makes it much easier to deal AoE damage, especially when combined with stuns like Fist of Fury. Against Mage teams, Delirium is a really good talent choice. Selecting this talent can drastically nerf Mage mobility by increasing the cooldown on Blink. Deathchill is an alternative talent that should primarily be selected when you need additional control against melee DPS. This talent is quite useful when you don’t have a reliable root effect on your team.

Tier 6

In 7.2.5, all talents on this tier are viable options. I personally play with Chill Streak right now as the meta is really fast paced. Because games are shorter and healing is much harder, Chill Streak is the optimal talent. Overpowered Rune Weapon is certainly a viable alternative if you prefer a playstyle with less burst and more frequent access to ruins.
