Gearing, Stats, Enchants, Gems, and Reforging: Shadow Priest

by Ashman // February 3, 2011

Greetings Shadow Priests. This article will be covering what I think is the best way to gear as a Shadow Priest using the best gear in the current game. This article will include Vicious GearingGemmingEnchanting, and Reforging along with why I chose the items I did. Everything is going to be broken down in order respectively as shown in the highlighted blue sections and all of this gear is found through the Arena vendors as there will not be one single piece of PVE gear in this build which is why I like it. I will also include items that come from professions as well in this article specifically Jewelcrafting and Alchemy.

One of the most crucial things in PVP is knowing how to gear yourself. Ideally you want to go for Resilience because it is the best stat in the game right now. However, I am not going to be going 4-piece Mooncloth which is what most Shadow Priests will be going for the 4 second “Freedom”. Most players think that the bonus actually is a Freedom but it really is not. The bonus does not remove roots but will only suppress snares which means that you only have 4 seconds to move freely until the snare starts taking effect once again. I personally do not think that’s worth going because of losing the stats over it just doesn’t outweigh the bonus especially when playing against good teams who have stuns, sprints, charges, and grips, ect. I will be going the 3-piece 2-piece variant as Shadow because of the extra stats and Resilience and I will be using the professions Jewelcrafting and Alchemy for my gems and trinket. I’m going to break these down in sub-categories from main pieces to off pieces then weapons and lastly trinkets.

Main Pieces

[Vicious Gladiator's Satin Hood]

[Vicious Gladiator's Satin Mantle]

[Vicious Gladiator's Satin Robe]

[Vicious Gladiator's Mooncloth Gloves]

[Vicious Gladiator's Mooncloth Leggings]

Off Pieces

[Vicious Gladiator's Pendant of Alacrity]

[Vicious Gladiator's Drape of Diffusion]

[Vicious Gladiator's Cuffs of Meditation]

[Vicious Gladiator's Cord of Meditation]

[Vicious Gladiator's Treads of Alacrity]

[Vicious Gladiator's Band of Dominance]

[Vicious Gladiator's Band of Cruelty]

Weapons

[Vicious Gladiator's Spellblade]

[Vicious Gladiator's Reprieve]

[Vicious Gladiator's Baton of Light]

Trinkets

[Vicious Gladiator's Medallion of Tenacity]

This is going to be what I’m wearing for my main set. I left the last trinket empty because the one I’m going to be using is from Alchemy and it isn’t in the game files yet to be linked. You can switch out the Medallion for another one with different stats if you’d like but I’m going to be using this since my Resilience is going to be around 3400. If you feel that you might need more Resilience my second pick would be [Vicious Gladiator's Badge of Dominance] or [Vicious Gladiator's Insignia of Dominance]. However, if you are Human or plan on going Human you can get both of these trinkets or just get one for the Resilience and choose another to your liking. As far as the Spirit Off-Hand and Wand go I’ll explain why I chose them over the Critical Strike version later in the Reforging section.

Yet another crucial part of gearing is knowing what to gem and what gem bonuses to get. I gem heavy Intellect because I love having more Spell Power than anything. Most Shadow Priests will favor Haste over anything else, but it mostly comes down to your play style and what you’re most comfortable with. I have Jewelcrafting as one of my professions and I will be using my Prismatics in this build that all consist of +67 intellect.

Gems

[Purified Demonseye][Vicious Gladiator's Mooncloth Gloves]

[Brilliant Inferno Ruby][Vicious Gladiator's Cord of Meditation] *

[Brilliant Chimera's Eye][Vicious Gladiator's Mooncloth Leggings] *

[Reckless Ember Topaz][Vicious Gladiator's Treads of Alacrity]

[Brilliant Inferno Ruby][Vicious Gladiator's Satin Hood]

[Reckless Ember Topaz][Vicious Gladiator's Satin Mantle]

[Reckless Ember Topaz][Vicious Gladiator's Satin Robe]

[Brilliant Inferno Ruby][Vicious Gladiator's Satin Robe]

Meta Gem Slot

[Ember Shadowspirit Diamond][Vicious Gladiator's Satin Hood]

These are going to be the gems I’m using for my gear. With patch 4.0.6 they are adding in new meta gems to the game and I highly recommend taking the new meta with +54 intellect and +3 critical strike rating because that’s what this build is based around. The gems listed with the gear that have an asterisk next to the item means that both slots will use the same gem. However, you may notice that I only have two [Brilliant Chimera's Eye] being used and that’s because the trinket I’m going to use has a extra red slot on it and that’s where I’m going to be putting it. If you plan on using a trinket with no extra slots I would put my last Prismatic in the [Vicious Gladiator's Satin Hood] red slot. I skip out on some socket bonuses for the extra intellect because I may already have more than I need of that stat. The leggings for example I decided not to go for the extra resilience bonus because I’m already up to around 3700 running my set up so I feel skipping on some resilience isn’t a bad thing at all.

Do you feel you do not have enough Resilience?

Many players right now may feel they do not have enough Resilience in their set up and many players are often using [Mystic Amberjewel] in the yellow sockets on their gear. Even some players are using all 3 Prismatic [Mystic Chimera's Eye] for their slots. With the luxury of 3-piece 2-piece some players out there are gemming resilience to further their survivability which is never a bad thing. If you feel you could use more resilience you can certainly replace the [Reckless Ember Topaz] with [Mystic Amberjewel] to gain the socket bonuses still. It ultimately comes down to what you want and how you want to play and if you’re comfortable with your gear.

Knowing how and what to enchant your gear with is often a challenge because if you mess up on an enchant or need to change it later you will most likely lose a lot of gold in the process. This section will cover the best enchants you can get along with reputation needed to get the best shoulder and helm enchants in Cataclysm.

Enchants

[Arcanum of Hyjal][Vicious Gladiator's Satin Hood]

[Greater Inscription of Charged Lodestone][Vicious Gladiator's Satin Mantle]

[Enchant Chest - Peerless Stats][Vicious Gladiator's Satin Robe]

[Enchant Bracer - Greater Speed][Vicious Gladiator's Cuffs of Meditation]

[Enchant Gloves - Haste][Vicious Gladiator's Mooncloth Gloves]

[Powerful Enchanted Spellthread][Vicious Gladiator's Mooncloth Leggings]

[Scroll of Enchant Boots - Tuskarr's Vitality][Vicious Gladiator's Treads of Alacrity]

[Enchant Weapon - Power Torrent][Vicious Gladiator's Spellblade]

[Enchant Off-Hand - Superior Intellect][Vicious Gladiator's Reprieve]

These are the enchants that I’m going to be using on my gear. They are very expensive to buy on the auction house but in the end I think they’re worth it. I see some Shadow Priests getting [Enchant Weapon - Hurricane] over the Power Torrent and that’s fine since most prefer the Haste. If you’re an Engineer you can stack your Engineering glove enchant on top of the current enchant. If you managed to get exalted with Therazane you can get the epic shoulder enchant that I’m using in the build, and the helm enchant comes from getting revered with Hyjal.  It takes a little while but it definitely is worth getting the reputation for these enchants because in patch 4.0.6 they are adding more enchants that provide resilience instead of critical strike and haste rating. With the Cloak you can put [Enchant Cloak - Greater Spell Piercing] instead of the Intellect if you’re having trouble with Mage Armor and Fel Hunter.

Welcome to the final section of the article, Reforging. The newest thing added to the game that allows you to change stats around and adds more flexibility in itemization. All the gear I listed is pretty much going to all be reforged to pure haste except the Alchemy trinket. When reforging as a Shadow Priest it’s pretty cut and dry on what to do with your stats. If you remember me mentioning [Vicious Gladiator's Reprieve] and [Vicious Gladiator's Baton of Light] earlier in the Gear section the reason I chose these was because of Hit Cap. Through the talent [Twisted Faith] which allows Spirit to be used as hit rating. Nearly every Shadow build has this talent taken because with the current gear it is very difficult to get hit capped without having to sacrifice so much stats.

Reforged Gear

[Vicious Gladiator's Mooncloth Leggings]

[Vicious Gladiator's Cord of Meditation]

[Vicious Gladiator's Band of Dominance]

[Vicious Gladiator's Band of Cruelty]

[Vicious Gladiator's Reprieve]

[Vicious Gladiator's Baton of Light]

[Vicious Gladiator's Spellblade]

[Vicious Gladiator's Satin Robe]

[Vicious Gladiator's Cuffs of Meditation]

So now that I have everything reforged to Haste that was the last thing I needed to do to complete my gear stats. I didn’t reforge any items that already had haste on them because you can’t change stats to add onto an already existing stat. I am avoiding Mastery as a stat because for it to be really good you need to get a lot of it and sacrificing my stats for Mastery just isn’t worth it especially since in 4.0.6 we are going to have a base Mastery percentage of 22% on all periodic damage.

Final Words…

Now that you have gone through everything I would like to go over the stats once all the pieces are put together. My current build with the Alchemy trinket I am going to have just a little over 8,000 Spell Power with 16% Haste and 15% Critical Strike rating. I am going to have a minimum of 3600 Resilience and I am hoping that will be enough for this season. If not I can always make a few adjustments to my gear for more resilience but I doubt that would even really happen. My damage reduction is at 52% with Shadowform so I think I’m good.

Remember that the way you gear is based on the way you play, I really love going heavy Spell Power while others maybe different than me. Some gear builds work better for certain comps while others don’t. Well, that’s all for this article and I hope this may have helped you Shadow Priests on deciding what to gear for. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment.

if you had 2 sets of the moonchoth and 3 sets of the satin gear, then would you have a + 800 res from the gear. sorry if its a stupid question but if not then why don't you invest in one more piece of gear and get that 5% haste to MS and MB?

Idk if I missed it but how much spell pen do we need to run with? Spell Pen cloak with cloak enchant? Priest buff or pally aura is 195 but idk if that stacks with anything. Tried your armory link but it was linking to a DK?

Nice guide. What would be your gear suggestion for an engineer using the helm? Should I go 4 piece satin or 4 piece mooncloth? Or some other variation maybe?

I would go with Synapse Springs and +50 Haste on my gloves. As for my helm I went +208 Spirit and +208 Haste so I could easily get the hit cap through Twisted Faith.
