Talents and Glyphs: Mutilate Rogue
by // February 3, 2011Hey everyone! My first guide for skill-capped is going to be about the mutilate spec. Let me get this straight, mutilate is a spec designed to deal an enormous amount of damage. It has a high burst potential and amazing overall pressure as well. So if you decide to play this spec, you should put points in talents that let you put out the most pressure possible.
Talents
Tier 1 Assassination:
[Lethality] 3/3: A basic talent that you really want. You want mutilate to crit as high as possible!
[Coup de Grace] 3/3: Envenom is your MAIN burst spell. So 20% damage is a huge buff!
Tier 2 Assassination:
[Ruthlessness] 3/3: A pretty solid talent. You are going to use a lot of finishing moves and with each there’s a pretty good chance to get an additional combo point.
[Quickening] 2/2: One of my favorite talents! It’s really a must have. You are going to get kited a lot as mutilate, so you will certainly need this movement speed bonus. Also the increased healing makes it easier for your healer to pick you up. And trust me – many teams are going to switch on you from time to time!
[Puncturing Wounds] 3/3: Another must have. 15% crit chance increase for mutilate? YES!
Tier 3 Assassination:
[Deadly Brew] 2/2: It basically allows you to use a more useful poison than crippling on your offhand
[Cold Blood] 1/1: Good old Cold Blood. You want to use it in burst situations. I recommend to use it with envenom because mutilate already has a quite high chance to crit.
[Vile Poisons] 3/3: A talent to improve your poison’s damage. It also gives you a 100% chance to apply your weapon’s poison when you use fan of knives, which comes in handy sometimes!
Tier 4 Assassination:
[Seal Fate] 2/2: Because of mutilate having such a high chance to crit Seal Fate is a great talent to quickly get you combo points on your target.
Deadend Nervs 1/3: More or less a filler talent. It’s not too bad to reduce incoming damage.
Tier 5 Assassination:
[Overkill] 1/1: A great talent to do as much pressure as possible during the opener. 30% energy regeneration for 20 seconds? Amazing!
[Master Poisoner] 1/1: An awesome talent that boosts both your offense and defense. It makes your envenom spell much more effective. Your envenom, poisons and your teammate’s spells hit harder AND it makes it easier for you to kite other rogues.
Tier 6 Assassination:
[Cut to the Chase] 3/3: You want to keep Slice and Dice up all the time if possible. So having every envenom and eviscerate reset its duration is great.
[Venomous Wounds] 2/2: Basically every rupture tick has a 60 % chance to deal about 2500 damage and give you 10 energy. Great talent!
Tier 7 Assassination:
[Vendetta] 1/1: This is the most essential talent of the mutilate spec. You want to use vendetta when you are going for the kill or at least force major defensive cooldowns like [Divine Shield] of your opponent.
Tier 1 Subtlety:
[Nightstalker] 2/2: A bread and butter talent for every rogue pvp spec. You really want to move as fast as possible while in stealth. Also the shorter cooldown is quite nice.
[Relentless Strikes] 3/3: A 100% chance to gain 25 energy after every 5 combo point finisher? Take it!
Tier 2 Subtlety:
[Opportunity] 3/3: Finally the last damage talent you are going to spec in and also one of the strongest.
[Elusiveness] 2/2: Again, a great talent. Who wouldn’t like a shorter cooldown on blind, cloak and vanish?
So, that’s it for the talents. Now let’s move on to the glyphs.
Glyphs
Prime Glyphs:
There aren’t really any options for prime glyphs for mutilate spec. You really should to use these three.
[Glyph of Vendetta]: It boosts your main damage cooldown -obviously a good choice.
[Glyph of Mutilate]: You can’t do anything wrong with five less energy on your main attack.
[Glyph of Rupture]: Rupture procs your Venomous Wounds talent, so it’s a quite good glyph.
Major Glyphs:
Although you have a few more choices I would still recommend using this three glyphs:
[Glyph of Garrote]: I’d say the best major glyph out there for rogues. Garrote silencing the enemy for five seconds is awesome.
[Glyph of Blind]: A great glyph for every rogue spec but especially for mutilate since you are using deadly poison.
[Glyph of Sprint]: Since you are not very mobile as mutilate every bit helps.
Minor Glyphs:
Minor rogue glyphs are pretty much gimmicky. But for pvp there are three that can be useful.
[Glyph of Distract]: This is the only minor glyph which actually helps in the arena. Being able to distract targets five yards further away can be quite neat.
[Glyph of Poisons]: It can help you in dire situations when you realize too late your poisons are about running out.
[Glyph of Blurred Speed]: IT MAKES YOU RUN ON WATER! JESUS!
Constructive Criticism is always welcome!
