In this guide I will give an overview of what is best when you start playing arena as a Resto Shaman. I will go through the best way to gear and optimize your character for PvP. That means I will go through gemming, stat priority, reforging, enchants, and gear.
As soon as you ding 85, you should buy the craft able PvP gear or buy the mats and get someone to make it for you. This is probably the best start you can get so you don’t get one-shotted in BG’s with all your green leveling gear.
[Bloodied Scale Belt]
[Bloodied Scale Boots]
[Bloodied Scale Bracers]
[Bloodied Scale Chest]
[Bloodied Scale Gloves]
[Bloodied Scale Helm]
[Bloodied Scale Legs]
[Bloodied Scale Shoulders]
Required Materials for the entire set is: 64x [Heavy Savage Leather] 80x [Blackened Dragonscale] 40x [Volatile Fire] 20x [Volatile Water] 20x [Volatile Life]
How to spend your honor
First thing you should consider getting is of course a PvP trinket [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Medallion of Tenacity]. If you do have the level 80 PvP trinket, i would advice you to start buying 2 armor pieces first instead to boost your resilience. [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Ringmail Armor] and [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Ringmail Spaulders] would be great to start of with. After that you are probably better off getting [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Band of Accuracy] and [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Drape of Diffusion] to get started with your hit and spell pen. After that it’s pretty much personal preferences of what is the bigger upgrade to you. Can either start with more off-sets or the rest of the main sets. So better start that honor farming asap!
When you want to gear a Resto Shaman it’s just like in all other arena seasons. You have to go all out in PvP gear if you want any hope of survival in arena due to the high burst which still exist in Cataclysm as it is now. That means you should choose to go for 2 Elemental gear pieces (which ideally would be [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Mail Gauntlets] and [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Mail Leggings] )and 3 Restoration gear pieces (which should be [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Ringmail Armor], [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Ringmail Helm] and [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Ringmail Spaulders]) to achieve the +400 resilience set bonus twice, over getting 5 Restoration parts and the 4-set bonuses Bloodthirsty Gladiator’s Wartide. This might change when the gear in general gets better, and the stats increases. Therefore, you should also pick the [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Medallion of Tenacity] and [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Emblem of Tenacity] to get as much resilience as you can get. Ideally you wanna aim for 3800-4000 resilience to be able to survive the high damage output there is at the moment. Here is a link of how that gear set would look like with gems, enchants and with everything being reforged:
Full Gear Profile
If you aren’t getting focused when doing arena you can choose to swap one of your trinkets with the one that gives spirit instead of running with double resilience trinkets to provide some more mana regen.
For Restoration shaman you can choose between allot of stats depending on your play style and how good of a player you are. Al tho there are a few key elements that everyone should have.
Since shaman uses a fairly amount of spell that require hit, you need to get 5% hit, so your hex’s and shocks doesn’t miss since it can be game deciding if you miss a hex or a shock on a healer when going for a kill. The best way to get this is by getting the 2 PvP rings that has hit, and then enchant / reforge the rest till you hit 5%.
You need 180-200 Spell penetration so your shocks and hex’s doesn’t gets resisted. This is fairly easy to get, you either pick the neck or the cloak that provides this stat.
To be able to survive anything you need to get at least 3500 resilience, and I will even recommend getting 3800-4000, depending on what comp you are running. If you are running a comp with partners that can peel well with cc, you can properly lower your resilience a bit, compared to if you are running a team with no cc, like melee zerg teams.
Intellect / Spirit
Once the 3 stats above is where they should be, you can pretty much put the rest into these 2 stats. A mix of these is the best option, so you are getting more mana regen, higher mana pool and more spell power.
The main focus with reforging as Resto shaman is to get the rest of the hit you need to be capped. You should have the 2 PvP rings that has +hit on them [Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Band of Accuracy] and [Vicious Gladiator's Band of Accuracy]. After you have done that, you should try get as much spirit as you can get by reforging.
Gemming as Resto shaman is quite depending on what gear setup you are using. If you are using 5 resto armor parts, you might lack some resilience and therefore need to add a few [Mystic Amberjewel]. On the other hand if you go for 3 resto parts and 2 elemental parts you should go for [Purified Demonseye] instead. Personal references is a factor to, depending on your play style you should gem differently. Though there are a few options depending what color the socket is.
Red socket: [Brilliant Inferno Ruby] [Purified Demonseye] [Willful Ember Topaz]
Yellow socket: [Mystic Amberjewel] [Willful Ember Topaz]
Blue socket: [Purified Demonseye]
Meta socket: [Ember Shadowspirit Diamond]
The enchants are also quite straight forward, although there can be a few personal preferences, but i advice to use the enchants that i showed in the profile earlier. A few key enchants would be:
[Enchant Chest - Mighty Resilience] – To get as much resilience as you can, this simply is a “must have” enchant.
[Enchant Weapon - Heartsong] – The best healer weapon enchant there is. It procs quite often and helps with the mana regen.
[Powerful Enchanted Spellthread] – Best leggings enchant there is for all PvP casters, DPS or healer.
With the new patch 4.0.6 there will be added new PvP enchants for head and shoulders similar to the old Wintergrasp enchants, which definitely is a must have as well.
With the Cloak you can put [Enchant Cloak - Greater Spell Piercing] instead of the [Enchant Cloak - Greater Intellect] if you’re having trouble with Mage Armor and Fel Hunter, but this shouldn’t be an issue unless you are Elemental.
The rest of the enchants varies a bit of personal preferences, but trying to increase your spirit and intellect is what you should aim for.
I have been though all the basics about starting to do arena as restoration shaman. You should now have good knowledge about how to gem, reforge, enchant and of course got some ideas how to gear your very own Resto Shaman in the best possible way for YOU. As said earlier in the article a lot of stuff can vary and my best advice is to test everything out and see what fits you and your play style the best.
This is my first article here on Skill-Capped so please comment on what you think about the article. And of course if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask!
