Team Stats (yay data mining ze armory)
(Warning: Big post here...lots of data pulled from armory and stuff...may be interesting to some...maybe not to all...sorry.)
So I'm a gigantic computer nerd IRL and work professionally with data...and I got bored so over the last couple of days I wrote an application to pull down tons of information from the armory...I'm still expanding this but I've gotten enough to put together some interesting team stats...I'm going to present them here just as a show and tell and to see what people think.
I'm posting this in 5v5 because there's no great place for it and the stats are for a 5v5 team...I don't know how many people actually read this section but hopefully they will see it.
Our team is Ele, MM, Unholy, DIsc, Holy... (We're considering changing the DK to an affi lock.) The data only covers the last 86 games because before that we had a different comp and so it's less relevant.
My "feeling" as we've played games is that our performance ebbs and flows with the hunter's performance...when he plays well we win, when he gets shutdown bad, we lose. Consequently I've felt like we play well on maps like Ruins and bad on maps like Dalaran (where they can LoS him very hard). I wanted to see if the data supports this:
So you can see we're 10-1 on Ruins and 13-6 on Blade's Edge...both of which are good hunter maps...and 10-12 on Dalaran, our worst map. =( Clearly we need to abuse fear bombs and thunderstorms more on that map to get them out into the open.Code:Map W L GP Win% AL ALW ALL ================================================== All Maps 50 36 86 58.1 129 126 135 Blade's Edge Arena 13 6 19 68.4 124 111 154 Dalaran Sewers 10 12 22 45.5 115 106 123 Nagrand Arena 8 9 17 47.1 159 195 128 Ruins of Lordaeron 10 1 11 90.9 116 111 171 The Ring of Valor 9 8 17 52.9 132 125 141
Surprising to me was Nagrand...I would have expected us to do better...but I think it's another map where the enemies easily LoS and our hunter and DK aren't the best at using LoS and get blown up particularly on Nagrand. I think in general we end up pulling the healers into bad spots but we tend to play aggressively to try to dissuade our opponents from going on the hunter.
For the curious, the AL, ALW, and ALL columns are average length of the games. All games, wins, and losses respectively. The minute of preparation is removed from the times. I was wondering if we had particularly longer or shorter games on different maps to see if that would tell me anything...but I don't see anything of particular value there.
Next, I wondered what our damage looked like...since pure damage can vary so greatly in a game depending on length/comp/etc...I wasn't expecting to find much here... I went through a few iterations and finally settled on a few metrics that seemed at least somewhat reasonable. I looked at average damage done per minute in wins (WAD) and losses (LAD) as well as "damage done per damage taken". My feeling has been that our hunter does very little damage when they are on him...and in many ways the same of the DK. So I was hoping that would play out in the numbers.
(DW is the DK, ET is the hunter, IH/NI are the healers, and VY is the ele.)Code:Name WAD WDDPDT WD LAD LDDPDT LD% ================================================== DW 71,283 9.654 0 51,190 1.845 71.8 ET 45,656 2.292 0 22,263 0.722 48.8 IH 4,809 0.286 1 443 0.016 9.2 NI 1,962 0.163 0 647 0.029 33.0 VY 59,160 3.109 0 27,249 0.924 46.1
Also in this table is the "times died in a game we won" in the WD column...as you can see...we only won one game when someone died...and that was when our priest died.
As for the damage, all of us seem to less damage when we lose by a decent margin. I was very surprised by the DK's falloff...he does 9.654 damage per point of damage taken in wins...but only 1.845 in losses...that took me by surprise and I have no great explanation. The DDPDT numbers are lower in both for the hunter than for the elem though, which seems to support our idea of aggressively trying to keep the other team from going on the hunter since he seems to be shutdown more easily and completely than the others.
It wasn't exactly the pattern I expected and wasn't really as insightful as I hoped...so I did a map-by-map analysis with the same data...here it is with the healers removed:
The hunter sees his biggest falloffs of DDPDT in wins vs losses on Dalaran and RoV...this makes sense because if they go on him on either map (or use LoS well on Dalaran), he will end up doing almost no damage. The hunter has his highest damage map (in wins) as Blade's Edge which should come as no surprise because we move aggressively to control the bridge so he can just tee off on people.Code:Map Name WAD WDDPDT WD LAD LDDPDT LD% ========================================================================== Blade's Edge Arena DW 74,891 19.307 0 47,553 1.811 63.5 Dalaran Sewers DW 63,369 8.089 0 51,761 1.856 81.7 Nagrand Arena DW 72,625 7.205 0 55,959 1.961 77.1 Ruins of Lordaeron DW 75,594 13.431 0 59,766 2.765 79.1 The Ring of Valor DW 68,011 7.192 0 47,267 1.634 69.5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blade's Edge Arena ET 53,555 2.548 0 24,080 0.940 45.0 Dalaran Sewers ET 43,899 2.689 0 17,116 0.553 39.0 Nagrand Arena ET 42,580 1.862 0 22,393 0.885 52.6 Ruins of Lordaeron ET 42,181 1.426 0 30,707 0.663 72.8 The Ring of Valor ET 44,882 5.440 0 26,105 0.682 58.2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blade's Edge Arena VY 62,924 2.442 0 21,616 0.854 34.4 Dalaran Sewers VY 65,919 5.017 0 23,465 0.867 35.6 Nagrand Arena VY 53,554 2.432 0 25,309 0.671 47.3 Ruins of Lordaeron VY 60,073 3.907 0 49,692 3.620 82.7 The Ring of Valor VY 54,800 3.556 0 35,416 1.180 64.6
The shaman also sees a bad falloff in damage on Dalaran...clearly that's a bad map for us and we need to work on it. The shaman plays ruins very well and the data supports that observation.
All 3 DPSers are on their low end in damage on Nagrand...clearly we don't play that map very well either...although in the last few sessions we've changed our mindset about that map and it's gone much better.
So then I got to thinking about our opponents and wondering where our strengths and weaknesses are...first of all, I look at the numbers of healers on the enemy teams:
First of all, we have improved our play against triple healer greatly...if I looked back further (including time before we had the DK), our record was 3-10 or something like that against triple healer. So I'm glad we've turned that around. While only 3 games is hardly a sufficient data set, one thing to note is that our average win against triple healer lasts 96 seconds...the one loss was 185 seconds...win early or go home?Code:Heal DPS W L GP Win% AL ALW ALL ============================================= 1 4 9 11 20 45.0 97 93 100 2 3 38 24 62 61.3 142 138 149 3 2 2 1 3 66.7 126 96 185
We're not as strong as we should be against single healer...those teams seem to magnify the survivability problems of some of our players, but I guess 9 and 11 isn't bad. To no surprise, also short games against single healer.
Since the comps don't say too much interesting, I took a look at the classes we were playing against. Maybe every team with a rogue is good against us...or every team with a mage. In this data, for hybrid classes, if they did more damage than healing, they're a DPS.
Wow...3 and 13 against teams with a shadowpriest...fml. Of interest is that we do well against druid healers (15-3), shaman healers (20-10), priest healers (30-16), but worse against paladin healers (27-33). The easiest class to interrupt and silence...I would have expected our best against holy pallies.Code:Class W L GP Win% ================================= DeathKnight 13 5 18 72.2 Druid (DPS) 8 3 11 72.7 Druid (Heal) 15 3 18 83.3 Hunter 20 6 26 76.9 Mage 23 19 42 54.8 Paladin (DPS) 13 3 16 81.3 Paladin (Heal) 27 33 60 45.0 Priest (DPS) 3 13 16 18.8 Priest (Heal) 30 16 46 65.2 Rogue 15 13 28 53.6 Shaman (DPS) 16 26 42 38.1 Shaman (Heal) 20 10 30 66.7 Warlock 24 15 39 61.5 Warrior 19 13 32 59.4
Also it seems we destroy DPS paladins, DPS druids, hunters, and DKs. DPS shamans (could be either ele or enh) are bad for us.
Lastly...I wanted to the same analysis per map...this is a big table but I'll present it anyway:
Blah...0 and 10 against DPS shamans on Dalaran...they apparently thunderstorm much much better than we do. Also 0 and 6 against shadowpriests on Dalran. On Ring of Valor, 1-6 against DPS shamans and 4-8 against holy pallies...wow...we gotta do better than that...Code:Map Class W L GP Win% ======================================================= Blade's Edge Arena DeathKnight 1 0 1 100.0 Blade's Edge Arena Druid (DPS) 2 0 2 100.0 Blade's Edge Arena Druid (Heal) 3 0 3 100.0 Blade's Edge Arena Hunter 7 0 7 100.0 Blade's Edge Arena Mage 8 6 14 57.1 Blade's Edge Arena Paladin (DPS) 3 0 3 100.0 Blade's Edge Arena Paladin (Heal) 8 5 13 61.5 Blade's Edge Arena Priest (DPS) 2 2 4 50.0 Blade's Edge Arena Priest (Heal) 7 4 11 63.6 Blade's Edge Arena Rogue 5 3 8 62.5 Blade's Edge Arena Shaman (DPS) 6 5 11 54.5 Blade's Edge Arena Shaman (Heal) 4 1 5 80.0 Blade's Edge Arena Warlock 7 3 10 70.0 Blade's Edge Arena Warrior 2 1 3 66.7 ------------------------------------------------------- Dalaran Sewers DeathKnight 3 1 4 75.0 Dalaran Sewers Druid (DPS) 3 1 4 75.0 Dalaran Sewers Druid (Heal) 4 2 6 66.7 Dalaran Sewers Hunter 4 1 5 80.0 Dalaran Sewers Mage 6 7 13 46.2 Dalaran Sewers Paladin (DPS) 3 0 3 100.0 Dalaran Sewers Paladin (Heal) 5 11 16 31.3 Dalaran Sewers Priest (DPS) 0 6 6 0.0 Dalaran Sewers Priest (Heal) 5 5 10 50.0 Dalaran Sewers Rogue 2 4 6 33.3 Dalaran Sewers Shaman (DPS) 0 10 10 0.0 Dalaran Sewers Shaman (Heal) 6 2 8 75.0 Dalaran Sewers Warlock 6 5 11 54.5 Dalaran Sewers Warrior 3 4 7 42.9 ------------------------------------------------------- Nagrand Arena DeathKnight 2 1 3 66.7 Nagrand Arena Druid (DPS) 0 2 2 0.0 Nagrand Arena Druid (Heal) 2 0 2 100.0 Nagrand Arena Hunter 3 3 6 50.0 Nagrand Arena Mage 2 3 5 40.0 Nagrand Arena Paladin (DPS) 2 1 3 66.7 Nagrand Arena Paladin (Heal) 5 8 13 38.5 Nagrand Arena Priest (DPS) 1 2 3 33.3 Nagrand Arena Priest (Heal) 5 5 10 50.0 Nagrand Arena Rogue 2 3 5 40.0 Nagrand Arena Shaman (DPS) 4 5 9 44.4 Nagrand Arena Shaman (Heal) 4 4 8 50.0 Nagrand Arena Warlock 3 4 7 42.9 Nagrand Arena Warrior 5 4 9 55.6 ------------------------------------------------------- Ruins of Lordaeron DeathKnight 1 0 1 100.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Druid (DPS) 1 0 1 100.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Druid (Heal) 1 0 1 100.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Hunter 2 0 2 100.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Mage 4 0 4 100.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Paladin (DPS) 4 0 4 100.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Paladin (Heal) 5 1 6 83.3 Ruins of Lordaeron Priest (DPS) 0 1 1 0.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Priest (Heal) 9 0 9 100.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Rogue 4 0 4 100.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Shaman (DPS) 5 0 5 100.0 Ruins of Lordaeron Shaman (Heal) 2 1 3 66.7 Ruins of Lordaeron Warlock 5 1 6 83.3 Ruins of Lordaeron Warrior 4 1 5 80.0 ------------------------------------------------------- The Ring of Valor DeathKnight 6 3 9 66.7 The Ring of Valor Druid (DPS) 2 0 2 100.0 The Ring of Valor Druid (Heal) 5 1 6 83.3 The Ring of Valor Hunter 4 2 6 66.7 The Ring of Valor Mage 3 3 6 50.0 The Ring of Valor Paladin (DPS) 1 2 3 33.3 The Ring of Valor Paladin (Heal) 4 8 12 33.3 The Ring of Valor Priest (DPS) 0 2 2 0.0 The Ring of Valor Priest (Heal) 4 2 6 66.7 The Ring of Valor Rogue 2 3 5 40.0 The Ring of Valor Shaman (DPS) 1 6 7 14.3 The Ring of Valor Shaman (Heal) 4 2 6 66.7 The Ring of Valor Warlock 3 2 5 60.0 The Ring of Valor Warrior 5 3 8 62.5
So yea...that's what I got...the armory is pretty easy...I wrote all of the stuff to pull all the data in just the last couple of days. It took hardly any time to pull down the full game history for our team. I'm expanding it more to pull down stats/gear/specs for all of the players involved...then I'll be able to do some more detailed analysis. I wish more information about each game was available but the armory only presents damage and healing statistics. =(
What ya'll think?

Yea I was discussing it with some of the guys and it's made us really think about what we should be trying to do on certain maps and/or against certain opponents.

Re: Team Stats (yay data mining ze armory)
Is there any way i can get a copy of your program to run for my own teams? That would rock!

Re: Team Stats (yay data mining ze armory)
I don't have it as a distributable thing...plus I'd have to distribute a backup of the SQL Server database and you'd have to one of those... I'd be glad to run it for anyone's team and give the numbers for them though...just need team size, realm name, and team name.

The biggest problems to overcome aren't technical at all...they have more to do with detecting if the character is logged in PVP gear (fairly easy by how much resil is present) but also which specs are the PVP ones. I'll probably just pull both specs/glyphs for each player so I can sort it out later on the query side. But the gear is a bigger problem because if someone is logged in PVE gear it's less useful. I'll probably keep multiple gear sets for each character in my database so I can hopefully identify the right ones...if all but a few pieces are the same I'll know that's just an update to existing set rather than a new set.

Re: Team Stats (yay data mining ze armory)
So I got a PM from someone asking me to run the numbers for his 3v3 team... I've been continuing to expand both my collection and my reporting. I'll soon be pulling down snapshots of gear/spec/stats as I scan the teams/games... Then I'll be letting it run pretty much continuously across all teams in all ladders on all battlegroups (US only for now...dunno how many changes in the XMLs for EU armory). So soon I'll be able to answer a lot of the random questions like "What percentage of holy paladins above 2K playing TSG spec 3/3 into Sacred Cleansing? ...or spec 2/3...or 1/3...or 0/3?"
Anyway, I've also made a program do pull the team report and format everything for this forum without me having to do it by hand like I did before...so here's an example I've done for the PM request...I've anonymized the names (he'll know who they are).
A lot of the same information as before...a few abbreviations to note are that "ddpdt" is the "damage done per damage taken" metric. The "dtpm" in the opponent class analysis is "damage taken per minute"...this show how much damage you're putting into those classes.
For what it's worth...this team is playing Disc / RDruid / Arms...

My quick analysis of this team would be that they use LoS well...as seen by having their best maps be Nagrand and Dalaran and their map being RoV. =)
They seem to be solid against a lot the major comps...RLS (5-0), RMP (11-3), TSG (8-3)...but they are even or struggle some against hunter teams...PHD (5-4), Beastcleave (6-8), Ret/MM (2-2)... They maybe struggle a bit against some shadowpriest comps.... Spriest/Rogue/Rsham is 5-4 and Spriest/Hunter/Hpala is 0-3.
All in all, the worst specs for them to face seem to be DPS paladins, hunters, and tree druids.
Looking at opponents by map, there are a few cases (Warriors on Nagrand, Warlocks on RoV) where that class takes much more damage in a loss than a win...so they're doing MORE damage when they lose than when they win in these instances. Only they know their approach against those classes on those maps, but it's possible they're tunneling a bit too hard and need to make some more switches. It's hard to say from this data without more insight from the team's members.

Re: Team Stats (yay data mining ze armory)
I got another PM...2v2 stats this time... As before...a few abbreviations to note are that "ddpdt" is the "damage done per damage taken" metric. The "dtpm" in the opponent class analysis is "damage taken per minute"...this show how much damage you're putting into those classes.
This one is Hunter / Healer (Priest)...

Highest number of games played on Dalaran and Ruins...lowest number of games played on RoV...how do you get that luck?
Hunter seems to have solid damage...maintaining a respectable 90+% of damage in losses...so I would guess they don't lose much because he gets locked down hard. He has respectable damage done per damage taken as well... Interesting data point on ruins...average damage is higher in a loss than a win. Damage falls the most on Dalaran...which is also their best map by win percentage.
Looking at high level compositions...against healer teams they're 75 and 62...but the average win is 198 seconds and the average loss is 258 seconds... Aside from heavy pressure forcing the hunter through all his major cooldowns (mainly deterrence), it seems like they should have decent longevity...why can't they win longer games? Does the priest oom or die?
For opponent comps, look at the warrior teams...7 and 10 with pally healer...8 and 1 with druid healer...1 and 8 with shaman healer...4 and 1 with priest healer... Pally is going to be tough with magic dispel and freedom to keep the warrior on target. I would guess tremor and purge are giving the shaman teams the advantage...purged shields and negated fears are huge. Also of interest is the shaman is the one healer where the priest's offensive dispel is not as powerful. Dispelling hots against the druid may help them a ton...dispelling sacred shield and blessings and hands may be helping them a ton against pallies...similarly against priest healer. Without absorbs and earth shield a waste to dispel, maybe the priest should be offensive via dots and damage rather than dispels.
They're destroying Mage/Rogue but splitting Spriest/Rogue...damn Psychic Horror...
All in all, they're killing DKs, tree druids (go go dispel), dps paladins (lolz dps pallies in 2s...esp against hunter/priest), and mages (um, hunter?). They're weaker against shaman healers (tremor and offensive dispel not as effective) and warlocks. Looking at resto shamans, they take more damage when you lose to them than when you beat them...so they're probably good at LoSing the hunter's damage and living...maybe going on them isn't such a great idea...they've never beaten a resto shaman on Blade's Edge where he can bail off the bridge...but their second worst map is RoV where the shaman should have no escape. Looking at the warlocks overall and map by map, we see that pressuring the locks seems to work well as they take almost twice as much damage in your wins compared to losses. The ability to pressure the warlock is highlighted on Blade's Edge...and you can see it starkly as you do almost quadruple the damage to them in wins. When you fail the pressure the warlock, you lose. See a similar difference on Ruins...they take almost 58K damage per minute when you win...but only 16.75K per minute when you lose.

Re: Team Stats (yay data mining ze armory)
^ That's the data for my 2v2.
Thanks a lot for the analysis, very insightful, confirms some info on which comps we need to work on and sheds some light stuff I hadn't even thought about... I'm surprised we have such a high % win ration on Dalaran, but so low on Nagrand for instance.
Good stuff dude.

Dalaran is a smaller map than Nagrand...your priest may have better positioning on it compared to Nagrand...you're closer to LoS from a random spot on Dalaran than you are from a random spot on Nagrand. Fear paths can also be a bit more devestating on Dalaran. It's also harder for you to overextend and pull him into a bad position on Dalaran compared to Nagrand.

Re: Team Stats (yay data mining ze armory)
Really interesting work and may provide pointers for teams looking to squeeze every last ounce out of their performances. I would just add from a statistician's point of view - your sample sets/population of the raw data are far too limited to draw any sensible conclusions. You'd ideally need around a minimum of 30 games on each map, and even then I'd be concerned that the conclusions were skewed since many games could be done on the same night, against the same team where they were consistently better than you, or you were tired, or ...
Just be careful into how you interperet your data with limited samples is all - I am sure you were aware of this beforehand in any case.
