Shared Diminishing Returns
Diminishing Returns refers the game mechanic in which spells become less effective against other player characters if used frequently within a short period of time. Spells that use this mechanic are grouped into categories, effects within same category diminish each other.
What this means:
When a spell with diminishing returns is used in PVP it's first effect lasts the full duration, if a spell used in the same category is used within 15 seconds of the *end* of the first effects duration then that spell's effects only last for 1/2 the normal duration, the third time only 25% of the normal duration and then the target becomes immune.
If a spell of the same category is used more than 15 seconds after the end of the first spell's effect then the second spell's effect will last the normal duration.
An example:
Say you are running a comp with a Mage and Hunter, a normal CC chain may be the following:
Polymorph (10sec) => Freezing Trap (10sec) => Wyvern Sting (6sec) = 26 seconds of CC
Since Polymorph, Freezing Trap and Wyvern Sting are all disorient effects the freezing trap only lasts (1/2) duration and the Wyvern Sting lasts (1/4) duration. So the cc chain is really:
Polymorph (10sec) => Freezing Trap (5sec) => Wyvern Sting (1.5sec) = 16.5 seconds of CC
Plan your CC Chains Accordingly:
It is important to plan the order of your CC chains in order to maximize their effective durations. Suppose you want to chain a warstomp with a 5cp Kidney Shot.
Warstomp (2 sec) => Kidney Shot ((1/2) * 6 sec) => 5 seconds of CC
Above is an example where you Warstomp before the 5pt Kidney Shot which only grants 5 seconds of effective stunning.
Kidney Shot (6 sec) => Warstomp ((1/2) * 2 sec) => 7 seconds of CC
Note by switching the order so that you Kidney Shot before the Warsomp you can 2 more seconds of effective stunning. Remember to keep this concept in mind when playing arenas!
