Marksmanship Hunter Talents Overview

Since the talent system received a huge revamp going into Dragonflight, we will cover both the class and the spec tree. They both have some mandatory and some optional talents.

Hunter Class Talents

There isn’t that much variation on the class tree. The core of the build gives you a very solid baseline that will be taken in 99% of your games.

Our goal here is to obtain the three capstone talents in Poison Injection, Death Chakram and Explosive Shot.

Into melee cleaves, you can drop Poison Injection and Serpent Sting for Steel Trap. Steel Trap provides us with some added control, which has a ton of uses. It can be utilized to peel for your team, reduce your damage intake or even set up kills.

Death Chakram gives you some nice on-demand burst that deals high upfront damage and increases the target’s damage taken on top of it.

Explosive Shot deals some impactful damage after three seconds. It’s great for combining it with the rest of your burst damage.

To get to these talents, of course, we will take all of the must-haves along the way. One of these is Scatter Shot. It gives you similar options to the ones you get from Steel Trap, making it a very versatile ability.

Marksmanship Spec Talents

Starting at the top, a must-have pick is Rapid Fire. It grants you a massive influx of damage on a very short cooldown. This, in turn, grants you Streamline that makes your next Aimed Shot cast at an increased rate. This is very strong considering that both Rapid Fire and Aimed Shot also interact with Surging Shots to increase their damage and grant Aimed Shot a chance at resetting Rapid Fire’s cooldown.

We also have Volley for additional damage, while simultaneously granting you Trick Shots. This is further buffed by the tier bonus in season 3.

Trueshot is another must-have talent for the cooldown reduction on Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire, as well as increased cast speed and Focus generation. It massively increases our burst damage, while the talents under it further increase its duration with Eagletalon’s True Focus and give you a huge boost to both Critical Strike chance and damage with Unerring Vision.

Overall, the choices in the spec tree are quite clear-cut with most top players sticking with this build for its combination of both utility and damage.

Marksmanship Hunter PvP Talents

In terms of PvP talents, the first pick that you will want in almost all situations is Survival Tactics. It basically makes Feign Death go from useless to one of the strongest defensive buttons in PvP.

The second default pick will be Trueshot Mastery. This reduces the cooldown of your most important offensive ability.

Additionally, we suggest having Chimaeral Sting as a third default pick as you’ll always be able to get value from this to slow, silence and reduce the target’s healing and damage. This will provide varying levels of value depending on the situation.

And Tranquilizing Darts is then another niche option that you can consider specifically into Restoration Druid and Preservation Evoker teams. This makes your dispel and interrupt reduce the duration of beneficial magic effects by four seconds. It helps counteract HoTs that these healers rely on.

Consecutive Concussion adds an additional slow to Concussive Shot. This is primarily used for the slow but does add a 4 second stun to every third Steady Shot as well. The stun is a secondary effect as the talent is mostly used for the slow, so you do not need to continually spam Steady Shot if you are unable to do so. This is great into melee cleaves where you need to kite as the additional slow will help with this.

Diamond Ice makes your freezing trap unbreakable and stops all damage and healing. This is great into Warlocks playing imp, Demon Hunters with Reverse Magic, or Priest with Mass Dispel. This trap also cannot be ‘deathed’ by a Disc/Holy Priest guaranteeing the CC. This is also good when playing with a class that do a lot of AoE to avoid your trap breaking.
