Assassination Rogue Talents Overview
Since the talent system received a huge revamp going into Dragonflight, we will cover both the class and the spec tree. They both have some mandatory and some optional talents. Those will depend on the situation and the comp you are playing. The Core talents will be the ones you pick almost all the time either because they are that good on their own, or simply better than all other options.
Rogue Class Talents
One important pick we have to make is between Elusiveness and Cheat Death. For most matchups, Cheat Death will be the standard pick due to the high burst.
Assassination Spec Talents
In your core tree, you also have a couple of core talents. One of those is Venomous Wounds, which is vital to dealing sustained damage. Playing without it will leave you Energy-starved. Cut to the Chase is central to our damage. If you do your rotation properly, this talent is a huge DPS gain. We go over maximizing these passives in our Sustained Damage Course.
We also want to play with Improved Garrote. It gives us huge momentum out of Stealth and allows us to snowball damage much faster. Note that this talent is slightly nerfed in PvP.
Moving down, obviously, we want to get Deathmark since it is our primary damage cooldown.
For a more single target focused build you can drop Scent of Blood and Sudden Demise for Poison Bomb and Dragon-Tempered Blades.
Assassination Rogue PvP Talents
Our first default talent is Smoke Bomb, which offers additional threat to your setups and can be used to force PvP trinkets or punish enemy targets who have no way to avoid stun setups.
Our second default talent is Hemotoxin. This adds a sharpened blade effect to our Shiv and can help to build pressure every kidney.
Dismantle is a solid talent, but only when there is a physical damage dealer on the enemy team (with the exception of Windwalker Monks). Having this additional CC tool is important defensively due to its ability to negate melee damage during big cooldowns.
Veil of Midnight is a new addition in 10.1. This makes cloak act as a second evasion and removes all harmful physical effects such as bleeds, disarms, etc. You are also immune to all physical effects for 1.5 seconds after activation effectively making it a BoP. You should play this into any class with strong physical cooldowns such as Warrior and Feral.
Control is King is a solid option when you do not need any of the other talent options such as into double caster. This passively increases your damage with no real drawbacks.
Your general loadout would end up having Smoke Bomb, Thick of Thieves and Veil of Midnight. These will be good in nearly every context.
