Frost Mage Talents Overview

Since the talent system received a huge revamp going into Dragonflight, we will cover both the class and the spec tree. They both have some mandatory and some optional talents.

Mage Class Talents

The core of our class tree is pretty straight-forward, but there are a few decisions we have to make when making the build.

Of course we want some of our signature control through Ring of Frost, Ice Nova, and Blast Wave. These are just great picks no matter what and can be used in a variety of ways.

Going down to our capstones, we want to have Greater Invisibility as a huge defensive cooldown. Right below it is Time Anomaly, which is huge offensive talent. This path down the middle gives us the best of both worlds.

On the right side, we definitely want to take Dragon’s Breath. This will make it easier for us to CC healers if we want to. But even outside of that, this is just a fantastic peel in general.

This leads us to the next choice we have to make with Shimmer being recommended at all times.

Frigid Winds then increases the effects of our snares. This is great since Frost has a lot of those in its toolkit. This is then followed by Ice Ward into Shifting Power. This will allow us to get our Frozen Orb and Icy Veins, as well as Dragon’s Breath and other CC back much faster. Shifting Power is very good for Frost because you are playing back a lot, and not really trying to get as much crowd control, so reducing the cooldown on a lot of your damage abilities is fantastic.

Frost Spec Talents

With the spec tree, we will be looking to get anything that buffs our Ice Lance, Frozen Orb, Icicles and Glacial Spike. We want to get any talents that revolve around buffing these damage sources.

We start off by getting Shatter, giving us crits into frozen targets. This talent has a lot of interactions with the rest of our toolkit, so it’s a very strong pick.

Cold Snap is an amazing cooldown to have in your toolkit due to how versatile and overall valuable it is. Having 2 Ice Blocks in the game is incredibly strong, and you never want to play without it.

Frostbite gives you a 10% chance to freeze the target. This is great because it means you can Shatter more frequently and peel for yourself.

Then we get some additional amplifiers in Piercing Cold and Bone Chilling.

The next biggest talent you can get is Ice Caller. Each time Blizzard deals damage, it will reduce the cooldown on Frozen Orb. This is incredibly strong when paired with Freezing Rain at the bottom of the tree. This makes it so every time you Orb, you get instant Blizzard with increased damage done. So both of these talents feed into each other with this great synergy.

Next, you definitely want to get Icy Veins. This is your biggest offensive cooldown. Although it says it has a 3-minute cooldown, you have talents like Icy Propulsion that reduces its cooldown and Thermal Void that increases its duration. It is also important to note that Icy Veins is no longer dispellable, so it will be up for its entire duration.

And to round it out, you will also be getting Freezing Winds for more Fingers of Frost, giving you Freezing Rain along the way for the combo we discussed before. So all of these talents in this combo will continuously provide value and feed into each other.

Into matchups where you think you will have difficulty casting you might want to consider dropping Hailstones and Glacial Spike for Frozen Touch and Deep Shatter.

Frost Mage PvP Talents

As for PvP talents, there isn’t a lot to choose from. You always want to be playing Concentrated Coolness. It buffs the damage of Frozen Orb and allows you to control where it goes.

We then recommend using Ring of Fire as your second PvP talent. The main strength of this talent is that it’s on a different school. If you get locked on Frost, you can just send out a Ring of Fire and continue doing damage.

The third slot is fairly open.

Frost Bomb is a new addition to Dragonflight and adds extra damage during your go. This is a great option when playing with a class that cleaves such as Destruction Warlock or Assassination Rogue. This will be your primary third talent.

Master Shepherd is a new addition to 10.1 and great option for extra stats, prevent healing when sheeping enemies, and can be played when you are fighting classes that do not stack such as double caster but in most match-ups Frost Bomb will have more value with the added damage.

Ice Wall can also be worth considering when dealing with teams that are just training your healer and killing them quickly, so that you can have another way to help peel for them.

Even though Snowdrift might seem appealing, it is too clunky to use consistently, and can mess with stun DRs. We would only recommend taking this in Healer/DPS 2v2 matchups assuming your healer lacks a stun effect.
