Discipline Priest Talents Overview

Since the talent system received a huge revamp going into Dragonflight, we will cover both the class and the spec tree. They both have some mandatory and some optional talents.

Priest Class Talents

What you see above is the default build that will be good for most scenarios you find yourself in.

Starting off with the class tree, our goal is to head down and reach Power Word: Life. This is essential in all scenarios as it offers a great way of recovering low HP targets, healing for 400% more and only having a 10-second cooldown when used on targets below 35% Health.

Another highlight is the addition of Void Shift, which is now available to all three specs. It gives us yet another must-have talent in the tree. This is incredibly strong as it allows us to immediately recover in very difficult situations to save either ourselves or a teammate.

Phantasm is also an essential pick. It gives us a way to remove all slows and snares whenever we press Fade. It’s perfect in combination with Angelic Feather for a burst of movement speed. The two together offer us some mobility and potential to kite or chase targets that we severely lacked when playing without a freedom effect on our team.

One of the most noticeable changes in Dragonflight is that Shadowmend has been removed. Instead, we now gain access to Flash Heal. We will also be getting Surge of Light procs from all of our healing spells and Smite, making the cast instant and cost no Mana. In combination with From Darkness Comes Light and Unwavering Will, it will provide us some much needed throughput outside of just Penance and Atonement.

Discipline Spec Talents

Moving on to the spec tree, we will be pathing down to Aegis of Wrath and Weal of Woe. These two talents will give us synergistic interactions between Penance and Power Word: Shield while buffing their effects. In order to do so, we will take Divine Aegis for additional shielding on critical effects.

Train of Thought will get both Penance and Shield back sooner based on how many times you use Renew, Flash Heal or Smite.

In order to reach the bottom half of the tree, we will pick up a selection of old abilities that now find themselves in the talents. Here we have Pain Suppression that gives us a 40% damage reduction for either ourselves or an ally. We also choose Shield Discipline over Power Word: Solace due to its more efficient mana return. You will be shielding A LOT as Disc, especially during Rapture. With the changes to Power Word: Shield, it has only gotten stronger. It immediately shields the target and bolsters your shield to have no cooldown and absorb 40% more.

Power Word: Barrier is an AoE damage reduction to counter enemy offensive cooldowns.

Something worth highlighting here are the Power Word: Radiance talents at the top left of the tree. Radiance itself, Light’s Promise for an additional charge and Bright Pupil to reduce its cooldown. These together with Ultimate Radiance are essential for healing output, but can be dropped is you are looking for a more offensive build.

Discipline Priest PvP Talents

Ultimate Radiance is taken to pretty much every game as it’s what makes Power Word: Radiance as powerful as it is, making it instant and heal for 10% more.

A good default second PvP talent is Inner Light and Shadow. Most often, you will want this set to Inner Light to reduce the Mana cost of your healing spells. But in certain scenarios where Mana isn’t an issue, swapping to Inner Shadow will give you both damage and Atonement healing, making this talent very versatile.

Phase Shift is a great default talent as this is a versatile talent that can be used to not only avoid CC such as polymorph, fear, and freezing trap but can also help you to push into the enemy team to get your own fear. This talent also synergizes well with several talents in the Priest tree such as Phantasm which removes movement impairing effects and Improved Fade which reduces the cooldown on Fade.

Purification can be a good option into classes where you are dispelling often such as Mages, Warlocks, and Shadow Priests. This now adds a 5% hp absorb to every dispel adding high value.

Against double melee, we highly recommend playing Strength of Soul, since buffs to shields gave this ability extra value.

Against double caster, where there is lots of spread pressure, you could play with Catharsis, since it gives you a small burst on Atonement healing as long as you are periodically taking splash damage.

Then when facing Resto Druids, you have option of dropping either Inner Light or Dome for Thoughtsteal if you want to try and rush them down for a quick win. You might also consider this talent specifically against Rogue Mage, to steal Polymorph.
