In this section, we will cover the biggest changes to the design of Discipline Priest in Dragonflight and some of their playstyle implications. Obviously, the main driving force for all adjustments this expansion comes from talents, and we will dive deeper into them a bit later. For now, let’s focus on the bigger picture.

What’s New for Discipline Priest in Dragonflight?

Discipline Priest has had some considerable changes coming into Dragonflight. Shadowmend has been removed which was once a staple of the Discipline Priest kit and has been replaced with Flash of Light.

In addition to Flash of Light, Discipline Priest now has access with Renew and Prayer of Mending which was exclusive to the Holy tree. This has helped to provide other options for healing especially when it comes to spread pressure that previously required the constant use of radiance. This is less taxing on the mana bar and opens up more playstyle and comp options.

Another new addition for priests is Power Word: Life. Discipline Priests lacked a strong emergency heal and this talent helps to fill that gap.

Finally, Discipline Priest is a healer that relies heavily on cooldown rotation. With the introduction of two charges of Pain Suppression this allows the priest to have a stronger and consistent cooldown rotation.

Discipline Priest Playstyle in Dragonflight

Atonement was a staple of priest healing and while it is still a strong part of the kit, Discipline Priests rely heavily on using shields and cooldowns to stay ahead of any damage. Discipline Priest is great at mitigating damage through the use of shields and cooldowns but may struggle to recover when they fall behind on healing.

As always, Penance is an important part of the Discipline Priest toolkit. With the addition of Power of the Dark Side, Purge the Wicked has a chance to increase the effectiveness of your next Penance by 50%. To maximize this effect, Purge the Wicked should be maintained on the primary kill target at all times.

Discipline Priests can also add kill pressure through the use of Shadow Word: Death and using Penance offensively as it can do a significant amount of damage when empowered.
