In this section, we will cover the biggest changes to the design of Retribution Paladin in Dragonflight and some of their playstyle implications. Obviously, the main driving force for all adjustments this expansion comes from talents, and we will dive deeper into them a bit later. For now, let’s focus on the bigger picture.

What’s New for Retribution Paladin in Dragonflight?

Rets received a significant overhaul in patch 10.0.7 which has made them significantly more durable while retaining exceptional burst windows thanks to the new 1 minute cooldown on Avenging Wrath which they can pair with Final Reckoning or Execution Sentence.

Ret’s off-healing has also been improved with the addition of Light’s Celerity while also retaining Word of Glory for emergencies. Lay on Hands also being usable in arena makes the ret off healing toolkit very strong.

Another huge change is the addition of Crusading Strikes which replaces Crusader Strike, making the ret paladin rotation feel much less bloated.

Retribution Paladin Playstyle in Dragonflight

The playstyle in general hasn’t changed too much from Shadowlands. It feels quite similar right at the start. Those who were around during the first year of Shadowlands likely remember how feared Ret Paladins were. That was due to the power of their 1-minute burst window with Divine Toll and Ringing Clarity conduit.

Divine Toll remains a part of your main build in Dragonflight. It will no longer provide the volatile burst it previously did, but it still provides access to a 1-minute burst window that can be paired with Final Reckoning or Execution Sentence.

With the way numbers are currently tuned, Rets are looking to be a class that not only dominates in burst damage, but also has the potential to out-damage many other classes in overall damage. While they still lack a mortal strike effect and strong peeling tools, they make up for it with off-heals and other utility for supporting their team.

All in all, Retribution remains very familiar to those who have played it in the recent past.
