In this section, we will cover the biggest changes to the design of Elemental Shaman in Dragonflight and some of their playstyle implications. Obviously, the main driving force for all adjustments this expansion comes from talents, and we will dive deeper into them a bit later. For now, let’s focus on the bigger picture.

What’s New for Elemental Shaman in Dragonflight?

The Shaman class as a whole received a bunch of new and returning abilities. One of the most unique additions was Elemental Orbit, which allows Shamans to use two different shields, and enables some interesting combos with Unleash Shield. Beyond that, Shamans saw the return of Gust of Wind, which is especially helpful as Elemental due to its limited mobility.

Elemental Shaman Playstyle in Dragonflight

The general playstyle of Elemental Shaman involves doing as much damage as possible with the least amount of hardcasting. This is done by maximizing Maelstrom generation through spreading Flame Shock, and doing huge bursts of AoE damage with a combination of Primordial Wave and Lava Burst. The primary Elemental Shaman build uses these interactions to empower their Elemental pets through Primal Elementalist and Skybreaker’s Fiery Demise.

These sources of instant damage are important, since Elemental still needs to use its expansive utility to carry some of the defensive load for their team. This is done through off-healing, including Earth Shield and Healing Stream Totem, as well as the multiple disruptive tools it has to shut down casts and reduce incoming CC.
